Big tech companies, which account for more than 5 percent of telecom providers’ average peak Internet traffic, would contribute to the rollout of 5G in Europe, according to a draft proposal from the EU’s telecoms industry, Reuters reported. Alphabet’s Google, Apple, Facebook’s Meta, Amazon, Netflix and TikTok are likely to be charged, according to industry estimates. Google, Apple, Meta, Netflix, Amazon and Microsoft alone together account for more than half of Internet data traffic.
The document, compiled by telecoms lobby groups GSMA and ETNO, was reviewed by Reuters but has not been published. They represent 160 operators in Europe, including Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), Orange, Telefonica (TEF.MC) and Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI).
